And by teaching our kids the "win at all costs" we are basically saying it doesn't matter who they run down in achieving what they want later in life. Biblicly speaking it says to "train up a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it", if doesn't sound good for the future. If I had more time I would be more than happy to return to the Jr. Pro coaching ranks.

missed a part of your post earlier. Mike cannot or does not have the power to let or not let a kid play. the board as a whole votes and makes this decision. His is just the only name here because of his basketball background. the coaches have a say also. the coaches in question could have protested the player before the game. The fight did not start until the team lost. Issues started on the DEC 16 as an eaarlier post stated but apparently the issue wasn't that big of a deal until they lost. They played once before with the illegal kid and beat them and didn't cuss everybody. You might want to get your facts straight. Mike told the parent and the coach on several occasions school ball players would not be allowed to play and yes the coach and the parent had addressed him on numerous occasions and each time was assured it would no longer happen. Furthermore, he admitted last Monday in front of several witnesses the board never met to discuss school ball players playing. He admitted there never was a meeting. The parent and the coach went thru the proper channels numerous times only to be lied to again.

I was at the Rec center the day after this happened and talked to Mike. He told me what had happened and how it was over a school ball kid playing. He said that school ball kids couldn't play while school ball was taking place and school ball was over, so the kid was allowed to play. This is how it has been for a long time. It is not Jr. Pro's rule it is the county's rule. They cannot stop a kid from playing once school ball is over. As far as allowing a kid to play that was to old that is another scenario. If Mike was there and was asked about it, it might have been his call on a snap judgement. This has been allowed in the past and nobody complained about it. Jr. Pro is for the kids but above all the coaches should be the role models for the kids. Playing your son, who could be and was, a difference maker is something that shouldn't have happened. This is the coaches fault and was not handled properly by the opposing parents. Rhino- I guess he didn't show you the league rules that were set at the beginning of the season stating they could not join after school ball was over- It was put in writing by the board and given to all coaches at the beginning of the season. It had nothing to do with the school rule.

The title of this thread doesn't entail all that it should. The coaches are actually the ones who bear the majority of the responsibility for teaching our kids. What has become the norm is the "win at all costs" attitude. When I first started coaching Jr. Pro 10 years ago, my team was more worried about getting their free Coke after the game. Most of those kids went on to play in middle and high school. They were all first year players and we absorbed more than our share of losses during the first half of the season, during the second half of the season we did much better. If coaches today realized that they are not going to get into the "hall of fame" for taking an 8-9 year old Jr. Pro team to an undefeated season it would be better for everyone. I have seen the talent level drop off in the middle and high school over the last couple of years. Jr. Pro is for the development of the individual player. When you get on into AAU then the competition becomes greater. Then you play for keeps with a hand picked team. By bringing a loaded team into Jr. Pro you might hinder another player from reaching their full potential. I would like to see a ranking system for the players and a draft to make the teams more even and intensify the competitiveness in all age groups. You are right rhino. Just ask the coach in question about winning and losing. He played all children on his team equal time. In addition last year he had to play the number one team several times which he was not scheduled to do because some other teams did not want to lose to them and never once did he refuse.

i think everyone should have the 'nads to become registered members on this site... a rule is a rule... a law is a law... looks like there are examples of both being broken... punishments should be dished out accordingly by the proper authorities in each case.....
