The Freshman/JV game versus Clinton was a very impressive showing by the Cougars. The 20-8 score is somewhat misleading since the Cougs led 18-0 at the half.
Another issue that should come as no surprise to long-time Cougars fans, the officiating was horrible vs. Clinton. Bradley Hicks had an interception return for a TD called back due to an asinine block-in-the-back call and Brandon Kennedy had an 85 yard run off a perfect option pitch by Arnie Meredith called back for another silly clipping foul.
I have never been one to blame officials for the outcome of a game, (except when Drew Pearson pushed down Nate Wright in a Vikings/Cowboys playoff game in 1975), but when we play Clinton, even in Little League and Middle School, it seems that Campbell Co. teams always get the short end . . .
Overall, the Cougars played very spirited ball on boths sides, totally dominating the line of scrimmage. Kudos also to Coach Wells who was on the sideline. Several times, Coach W would pull a player aside to discuss with the player how to improve his performance. That is not only coaching, but also teaching.

Very well said, volviking. The block-n-the back when Bradley returned that td. The ref told Coach Wells, that he ALMOST blocked in the back...those were his exact words. Yet he still through his hanky and the call stood.

They also stick the worst ones doing JV and middle school football. Hopefully the guy that said that won't make it past that level. Congrats to the junior COugars. Remember that JV success doesn't always translate to varsity success later. You must keep up the hard work and stay the course.

There was poor clock management during the second half. It is hard to build a program when AC, Scott County, and Cumberland Gap are all pulling your players. Wells has actually come as close to anybody to stem the flow of athletes to other schools. It isn't just football either golf and basketbal are seeing alot of athletes leave the county for elsewhere. The Cougars were without at least one starting linebacker this week and if I am not terribly mistaken we had a dlineman playing with a broken hand. That couldn't have helped against the run. I don't know how our depth is at those positins but I am sure it is a big drop off. I don't think athletics are the only reason the kids are leaving CC...I have on good authority that at the HS and at one of the MS things are run like a circus...it is a joke what I am HEARING...I am not deeming it fact, but if true I applaud the exodus. The district must improve in all facets if they are to achieve exellence on any front!!!

Oh, One other BIG what the heck is he doing??? Last quarter, we need time and scores. We keep trying to run the ball and continue to let the clock run down. Why would any coach leave two time outs on the board and run the ball when time and the score is against you??? very very good question...

They have, unless they have hired some I don't know about, five English teachers for the entire school with one of them possibly leaving at Christmas. They only offer Spanish because they can't find anybody to come in to teach another language. You can read more about this over at www.campbellcountyissues.com if you want. Knowing what I do from years of being around this system I can really say this is the worst shape it has been in. Now I will say that of the teachers there we still have some very good ones. But NO young teacher wants to take a position there. We should give the school to the Boy's and Girl's club and start over with Jacksboro and LaFollette High Schools.

Justin chapman just started teaching there this year. he is 24 years old. he just graduated from ETSU and teaches biology...... well, one of the reasons about teachers, not just in this area, is that the pay is not all that great. and when it comes down to it, you get what you pay for. and that accounts for everything... including sports.
