Jellico comes in at 1-6, 0-3 in district 4-A, Wartburg is 2-5, 2-1 district 4A.
Wartburg-We have the #1 pass defense in the district & are only giving up 15 points per game. That bolds well for us since Jellico likes to throw it around. But, we dont have much of an offense hence the 2-5 record. If we can win out we would finsh 5-1 in the district & get 2nd place which would send us to the play-offs. Therefore Jellico is a must win.
Jellico-From what I have seen on film they just cant put a complete game together. Coach Marlow runs a multiple formation offense that is mainly spread. They have a good screen game & a few good playmakers. Jellico faithful can give the names, but #5 & #33 appear to be lightning fast, probably faster than anyone we have here & #34 is a very solid running threat. If those 3 all get going on the same night they could be dangerous. They appear to be low on lineman, but if Marlow is coaching the O line Im sure that will change soon.
Im not going to give a score prediction, but I would like to hear some positive discussion on this game.

In many games Jellico has been better coached, and has had better talent in some cases. They simply self-destruct due to the lack of previous success. #5 Nathan Overton was the fastest player at the Cumberland Gap Jamboree #33 Darius Marlow didn't run, but is at least as fast, if not faster than Overton. #34 Ryan Morris is a tough kid that can get some of the hard yardage. The sad fact is that the OL/DL is overmatched every week due to the lack of team strength. The weightroom will be a point of emphasis for the Devils this offseason. IF the QB had been in that position all summer and fall he would be a solid player. But if a frog had wings he wouln't bump his butt on the ground. Also the Coalfield game was unfortunate; with those conditions it was impossible to throw at all, and Coalfield loves its power I...which they ran well. The Devils were approximately 5 of 15 passing with 6 drops...you can't win dropping that many balls in any weather. Jellico spotted them their usual 16 points in the first quarter and then shut them out...Coalfield tacked on a cheap score with a minute left in the game. On a dry surface it may have been a little different. The WR corps can improve its hands, the QB can learn more, and the OL is not strong enough...the defense is improved, but can be better. Jellico will be better with time...just like any rebuilding process. It is a big task with the proper support, and work ethic by the players and coaches it can be done.

I think that i may make the trip up to Wartburg this week to see this one. Im expecting Wartburg to win big, but Im interested in the coaching matchup with Ellison calling defense for wartburg & Marlow calling offense for the devils. Should be interesting. I actually did go to the Wartburg Coalfield game coach. I sat on the Coalfield side as it appeared too overcrowded for the limited amount of seats on the visitors side. Wartburg looked really good. Coalfield has a very nice football field & a great atmosphere, I was kinda surprised with it being single A football. I have yet to see the devils in person this year. But. Im looking forward to a road trip this friday. Good luck to both former cougars & your teams.

I do look forward to coaching against Marlow, but I would rather be coaching with him. He has a great mind for the game. But, keep in mind that the players are the ones on the field that have to execute. We just try to do our best to put them in the right spots to make a play.
On a side note the first year I ever coached was 1997 at Jacksboro Midlle school. Marlow was an 8th grade lineman on a team that went 9-0. Great team, starting out with that group made me think coaching was going to be a piece of cake haha, lots of talent there.
Willcall its A football, but 2a play-offs get it right. lol

In any other situation it would be really fun. The weather is going to make it miserable. Off that 97 team there are two offensive coordinators and one defensive coordinator. The Prices are the other two from that team that are coaching. The burg may have a little more talent than jellico this year. They have a pretty good looking line.

It was a mudd bowl if you will.
If everyone can go to prepxtra.com & vote for my middle linebacker for defensive player of the week he made 10 tackles 3 for loss, a qb sack forced a fumble & recovered a fumble.
On another note the Wartburg defense is ranked #10 in the state in 2a football.
