What needs to be done for the CCHJS football program to turn this season around? I know they lost a lot of Srs last year, but why are we not able to even be competitive with good teams this year? Has Wells thrown in the towel because his boys left?

I was curious what CCHS and Jellico have been doing/are planning to do for offseason conditioning. Posted elsewhere, the topic didn't arouse any interest but this thread, being specifically about what needs to be done, is a more appropriate venue for it, perhaps.

bluecrush, when I played Pebley & Bruce were running the show in the mid 90s & we took 2 weeks off at the end of the season then got to work on the weights. We did plenty of condition running, but I can not remember how much speed training we did. I was gone by the time Kesselring took over as coach, but from what I have heard his off season workouts &conditioning were brutal. Maybe ball coach can lament on that more. When Wells came in Wampler ran the weight room & conditioning & had the guys going really strong. Now Shouse has been a part of both those staffs & I believe that he is probably working them as hard as ever.
The off season is huge! I have no clue what Jellico does, but we are working our guys out hard & do plenty of speed training. We also have in season work outs after practice 2 days a week to maintain our strength throughout the year.

Not bad! What kind of participation rates(how many kids tried out for ball at the start of the season) do CCHS, Jellico and Wartburg have? If low participation is a problem, perhaps any and all schools could advertise their offseason weight program as open to anyone interested and use it as a recruiting tool. Hey, anyone that takes you up on the free conditioning training that isn't already out for football, while you're not requiring them to commit to play in order to work out, you'd have the whole offseason to work on getting them to try out for football. And if, after a few months of weight work, you have some guys who didn't really want to play, yet made good gains in the weight room, you could show em that hey, if you can do this and do well, you've got a shot at doing well on the ballfield.

We need to stop hoping for a group of talented players to give us a good season.
We need a coaching staff that can take a young man and teach him the game. If you can do this a string of descent seasons will follow. Then when the gifted come on board you become great!
As we are now, and historically speaking, if the gifted aren’t on board we have a hard time even winning a game.
Even the Detroit Lions could win one once in a while with Berry Sanders. But without a solid team strong in the basics...well the rest is history.

Jellico WILL have a good offseason program in place. As of now the devils lift 2 days a week.
Kesselring ran a great offseason program. Personally I was faster and stronger as a result of spending two years in that program.
