I believe these records are accurate, Altough the 2001 squad did not go undefeated, they played one of the toughest schedules in school history. They qualified for the first ever trip to the TMSSAA play-off which began in 1998. Chris Johnson broke every school rushing record at JMS & the only losses were to the two teams that played for the championship. They beat the defending champions Oak Ridge Jefferson 42-16 & Wartburg the single A runner-up 30-6. Two of the JMS playeres on the 97 team are now coaching at JMS & it was my first year as a coach. This was a very deep team. I played against the 91 team as a Lynn Camp KY. player, we lost 16-0. Tell me whos the best?

I'll go with the 97 team....Prices, Marlow, Douglas, the Donalds, Lay, and IMO the best player on the team that yr, Jason McCullah....that team was loaded with talent...they didn't get challenged all year! Wow was that 1997? Doesn't seem that long!

I can think back to a couple of undefeated teams (back to back) in the early 90's that could challenge teh aforementioned... cant say who would win but then who could... I'll try to come up witha few names to point these teams out... just give me a little time to do so..

This is a tough choice but, as much as I like Chris and think he is a great runner, I do not see him having a super game against the defense of the 97 team.

Well I am biased, but based on high school and college acomplishment I'll have to say 1997. Here is a list.
Justin Price: All State in any poll one wants to check, 3A Mr. Football, State Semis, Every passing record at CCHS, and still setting records at Maryville College....NOTE he and Matt went to D-1aa ETSU but they cancelled football after the Prices were there for 1 season.
Matt Price: All State any way you slice it at AC...all region at CC very skilled player...best attribute would have been special teams returns. At Jacksboro lets not forget he shared the backfield with a great runner in Jason McCullah...either one of them would have blown away records if he'd been the feature back...but it reflects devotion to team to see two stand outs split time in order to play and win team football.
Devin Douglas was a very solid lineman, and I think could have played some college ball if his heart had still been in it after four years of futility at CCHS
Derek Marlow: All State in the combined 1-4A team, 2A all state KY, All-Southeast KY, Southeast KY Defensive lineman of the year, All District District, and at CC won the TN Valley Iron Man Competition back to back years 99 & 00. Attended D-1aa Coastal Carolina and Centre College of Danville KY.
Matt Lawson: Tough linebacker any way you cut it...an injury cut his career short or he could have played some ball at the next level.
Brandon Elliot played as an all stater at AC, and played his college ball at Cumberland in KY.
Chris DeMott was a hard nosed player in Middle and High School...he had a nose for the ball, and always made plays...which is the main reason he played rugby at the next level at D-1 UT Chattanooga...not many people can say they are tough enough to do that.
Guys that didn't make the next level were standouts, but had issues that hampered their football career.
Jason McCullah...if he hit the sideline he was gone...no question even in high school...he had college speed, but lost interest when Kesselring walked out on his seniors 2001.
Jeff Mounts, Dewayne Moser, the Donald boys, Tad Bostic, Matt Lay and many other contributors made this team hard to handle. All those guys either were or could have been tough in high school, but size/visibility hampered their ability to go to the next level.
I don't see any team coming within two touchdowns of the 97 team just because of the weapons on offense and the strength and speed of the defense. Whichever team Daniel Berry was on would have been the closest...the others would not be in the same stadium.

Hey the 2001 team was tough. They brought a strong downhill running game and a stingy defense until the robertsville playoff game.
But I will say, I had a cousin on the 97 squad, that may have been the hardest hitting defense I have ever seen, Redhound correct me if I am wrong, But didnt in the championship game in 97 the other team walked off the field because JMS hit to hard.

At the Hilltopper Bowl on Spurrier Field in the 3rd quarter with the score 36-0 the team walked off the field after their QB went down to a very hard hit. The team was a combined Liberty Bell Middle and Science Hill Middle with great size/speed @ wideout, and also good line size...it is noteworthy that this was in the day when Science Hill and DB battled it out in the old region 1 before the re-allignment in 2001. I remember in 1998 when Science Hill and Clinton...which won the Region 2 5A crown...played @ Clinton in the playoffs they were impressive.

Side note: I forgot that in addition to Chris DeMott playing D-1 rugby so did Devin Douglas at MTSU, I give tons of respect to anyone that plays D-1 rugby.

i would like to see that game!! 97 vs 01. It would be interesting. I am biased because I coached the 01 team with beardencoach and really didnt know much else about 97 except for hearsay from jb. And you know how that is!!! lol I think it would be fun and come down to the last 2 minutes of the game!!!!

That would be an awesome game. Berry's team was good but they didn't have the one-two punch of Matt Price and Jason McCullah.

I was fortunate enough to coach on the 97 & 01 team. It would be a great game. The thing about Chris is that he was Matt & Jason combined, he was great. The 97 team did have more depth. I wish the TMSAA would have had the play-off system a year earlier, if so JMS may already have a championship trophy in the case. One thing is for sure the 2001 team started the string of play-off runs that is currently standin at 5 & got Jacksboro football back to where it should be. They are without a doubt the best team ever that didnt go undefeated.

But the problem with Chris was that he was one person. PLus Matt and Jason had a great fullback. I know Chris didn't necissarily need one but think what he could have done following a lead blocker and not Max or what ever that kids name was.

Johnny Bruce can be quoted in a 1997 Press article as saying "its the best team I've ever coached." I just sat down and watched the 50-0 whipping JMS put on Jefferson that year...until the 6th grade team gave up 20 in the 4th, and it really looked like a small high school team. I coach now, and I am realistic about abilitiy/competition and that team flew around, hit, and blocked down field like one expects a high school team to do. I mean the closest two games of the year were:
JMS 30-Oliver Springs 0 JMS 34-William Blount 8...I guess we didn't travel well...hahaha!!
