marlow scored 52 in a coaches vs refs game a few years ago, he was out of shape , but he still had the touch.... he was hitting from about 25ft

Marlow was probably the best offensive player ever...but he did tend to snowbird some.
Garner was real...Darrell Cox was as well. Paul Provins was a man among boys. Joe Carrol was a pretty darn good point. Chuck Wells could play. Billy Wayne Stiner was a force on the floor. Some of the players on this poll were good, but in the late 70's through the late 80's they could not have been water boys on some of those teams. Heck the bench on most of those teams could have beaten up on some of Hunley's teams in the 90's and they were great teams.

As far as the best team it is hands down the Marlow, Provins team that went undefeated. If you go all season and don't lose in High School BBall then you are real. The whole starting 5 could dunk it with authority. The TSSAA situation that year cost them a state championship.

Matt Housley, Trent Shown, Chris Smith, and Travis Thompson are all good players, but they are not....I repeat are not one of Campbell County's greatest basketball players. When I think of great Cambell County basketball players I think, Kermit Marlow, Bo Vinsant, James Boshears, Billy Wayne Stiner. These players were all players that were unstoppable. You put a good defensive player guarding most of the people on this list and they would be SHUT DOWN. Tarheelfan you bring up this poll and mention all these players, but its not even close what the list should look like. I played with Chris and Travis and both are extremely good ball players but Im sure if you asked them as well they would tell you that they should not even be mentioned. Im sorry if I have stepped on any toes, but come on people get real. Chris, Travis I love you both and you know that. I hope that more people start to realze just how good Cambell County basketball was and can be....

you are right. as far as rebounding, paul was awesome as far as pure strength but john garner and darrell cox were intimidating rebounders. some players are instinctive for knowing where the ball is going off the rim. these two were and they didn't care to mix it up with anybody who got in the paint with them. Billy Wayne was a pure shooter. Marvin was all over the place, he would dive into the stands, on the floor a good offensive and defensive player. Kermit was the best foul shooter I have ever seen. That team had such a great supporting cast that each one made the others better. With our usual teams you will have 1 or 2 very good players but they are having to carry the rest of the team. That team could shoot and know someone was there to rebound, go after the steal and know that someone was rotating over to pick their man up if it didn't work. They could relax and play and therefore played their best. that was what was go aggravating about that year because Joe Carroll didn't bring anything extra to that team, I wasn't impressed whatsoever with him and it was such a shame that that screwed up their season. I am digressing, Josh is right, then the players lived and breathed basketball. when billy and i were dating we would play pick up games at the rec or chris arnold's back yard. we wanted to. John Brown hung out at the gym and would give everyone pointers, boys and girls. those guys Josh mentioned were dominant players I mean dominant, I haven't seen a dominant player in a long time up here.

It's hard to really mention people you never watched play.... I said Ben Berry, during his second senior year

.... I watched James, Bo, and even a tape or two of Kermit, and definately think James and Kermit were great, but Bo has gotten better after high school. Of course, everyone still plays with him and would think he was great. He probably was the 2nd or 3rd best player on his teams. He was still a good player though. As for older players, if you were born in the 80's (josh) then you really have no idea about Kermit and any player before that time.

I have been watching CCHS Basketball for 30 years, and James Boshears and Ben Berry both were as good as anyone in the 70's and 80's. And Matt Henegar and Bo Vinsant were not to far behind.

just curious, we were talking rebounders this weekend, gary ward had a 30+ game in rebounds. who has came close or has broken this #? I think this is pretty amazing.

When I thought Rebekah was going to play hs basketball...I knew she needed someone to work with her one on one shooting. Kermit...was the one I knew she needed! Kermit's son played Jr.Pro for Rhino......Kermit was the best in my time....he was one awesome player.

i talked to david friend yesterday, he said he had 26 one game and ben berry most was 27.

I'm with ya stinersmom10, you're right. The game of basketball was that in itself BASKETBALL when Billy Wayne, Marvin, Kermit, Paul, etc. played. They knew the chemistry that was on the floor and there was no second guessing the other. Of course the attitudes were completly different then to which makes a big difference. You could coach these players and not worry about pleasing everybody else. It was an honor to play basketball for your school then. You took the word "team" and it meant something, you had respect for your coach, and the work ethic was totally different. Sometimes I wonder if we would go back to the old practices would those championship teams return or would we be arguing for a new coach?
